Termites cause millions of dollars’ worth of damage every year to home and property which is not covered by insurance. For most people, their house is their biggest asset, so it is important to protect it from potential damage. Termites attack soft wood, hard wood, plaster, timber furniture etc, with attacks coming from Subterranean Termites (White Ants).

If you think you might have termites or come across a termite nest around your home, the most important thing is not to disturb them or self-treat. It is best to leave it to the professionals as you could push them to other areas of the property, and they could go undetected.

Silverfish are agile, fast running, nocturnal insects that generally avoid light. Silverfish are found in roof voids, wall voids, subfloors and many other areas within the home. They feed on most human foods but prefer starchy material such as rice, wheat etc. Silverfish can damage books, photos, cottons, linens and wallpaper if left untreated.

Tips to help with silverfish management:

  • Inspect incoming goods that could be hiding silverfish such as furniture and second-hand books
  • Books and papers stored away in closed cabinets make for ideal living conditions for silverfish, so where possible, store these items in light and airy conditions.
  • In the kitchen, store open foods in airtight containers and clean up scraps and crumbs frequently.

The three most common types of rodent found around the home are the House Mouse, Norway rat and Roof rat. Rats and mice are competent climbers and can scale rough walls, pipe work, trees and vines. They are mainly nocturnal but can be seen during the day if food is scarce or there is low risk of danger.

Rodents constantly gnaw on a variety of materials around the home including electrical wires and cables, parts of equipment and machinery, door frames, pipes and much more. This can cause a great deal of damage including fire from damaged wires and become very costly. Rodents may also carry and transmit many diseases to humans by contaminating food and through direct contact with droppings and urine.

The Norway rat has 5-6 litters per year with an average of 8-10 babies per litter, the roof rat has 4-5 litters per year with an average of 6-8 babies per litter and the house mouse can have up to 6-10 litters per year with an average of 5-6 babies per litter.

Tips to help with rodent management:
